Proton VPN's free tier requires zero payment upfront or per month. Simply create an account and you're good to go. A paid subscription is also available and does offer better speeds and more server locations, but this guide covers the completely free option.

Visit protonvpn.com on any device

Click Get Proton VPN

Scroll down and click Get Proton Free

Click Continue with Free

Enter your email address to create an account

Click Edit Password and type in a new password

Make a note of this — you'll need it to sign in on your device.

Click Set New Password

Download the Proton VPN app from the App Store on your device

Available on Amazon Fire TV, Android, iOS and more.

Once installed, open the Proton VPN app

Click Sign In as directed on the screen

On screen you will be shown a code — go to protonvpn.com/tv on your PC or phone

A unique code will appear on your TV or streaming device screen. Enter this code on the Proton VPN website to sign in without typing a password on your remote.

Enter the code from your TV into the website

This signs you in automatically — no need to type your password on the device.

You can now connect to any of the free servers in the app
